Walsall Pubwatch: Supporting Safety with the Ask for Angela Scheme

In partnership with Walsall Council and West Midlands Police, Walsall Pubwatch proudly supports the Ask for Angela initiative. This innovative program aims to provide a discreet and effective way for individuals to seek help if they feel unsafe while on a date or night out.

What is Ask for Angela?

The Ask for Angela scheme is a discreet safety initiative designed to protect individuals who may feel unsafe, vulnerable, or uncomfortable while out in pubs, bars, and clubs. Originally launched as part of a campaign to prevent sexual violence and harassment, the scheme has gained widespread support across the UK and is now a crucial tool in ensuring the safety of nightlife patrons.

If someone finds themselves in a situation where they feel at risk—such as during a bad date, encountering harassment, or feeling threatened—they can simply approach a member of staff and "Ask for Angela." This phrase serves as a subtle codeword to let staff know they need help.

How It Works:

  1. Approach a staff member: Guests who feel unsafe can approach the bar or a member of staff and ask for Angela.

  2. Discreet support: Staff are trained to recognize this request and take action calmly and discreetly.

  3. Tailored assistance: Depending on the individual's needs, staff may:

    • Escort them to a private or safe area within the venue.

    • Arrange for a taxi or safe transportation home.

    • Notify security or call the police if the situation requires further action.

The Ask for Angela scheme empowers individuals to leave uncomfortable or threatening situations without having to explain themselves or draw attention.

By fostering a culture of care and vigilance, this initiative creates safer spaces for everyone to enjoy their night out while ensuring that help is always close at hand.
